[TV] The What Anime Are You Watching Thread!

This is also true, and the reason I still haven't finished the series. I've tried but some of the episodes just go right over my head. Same for Joshiraku, which is MUCH shorter (one cour), but comes with a plethora of very culture-centric jokes.
It's written by Kōji Kumeta (Sayonara Zetsubo sensei), of course it has all these jokes.

It also has many hard or impossible to translate jokes based on japanese wordplay and obscure cultural references and is for a shonen jump title really wordy. However the first movie got a english dub.

I believe stuff like FLCL and Magic Shopping Arcade Abenobashi has shown us that if you let writers go at it they can make a servicable, fun, dub of shows that sub only are way to much. Given, the dub wont even be close to what the orginal was about but I feel like it can work out better.

Kikimaru and I started watching Astarotte’s Toy today, and while on paper it would seem like a very icky show (10 year old succubus starts building her harem with 23 years old human man) its actually really cute and more about family and such.

I haven't really been into Anime since I liked Pokemon and Digimon as a kid, but on a whim I've started watching Space Dandy, and I really like it. I just wish the dubbed versions were on Hulu instead of subtitles.

I do wish I knew some Japanese just to know if the intro is meant to sound stupid and half assed, or if thats just the guy saying it.

Isn't it on the Adult Swim website? They get the premiers... hell, they get them before JAPAN (or at least it premiered on AS before Japan).

Well thank you.
Space Dandy is weird. Like... we just got an episode that parodies High School Musical, but with aliens. Let me repeat that: a Japanese anime (from Japan) parodied an American made-for-tv movie (on Disney), by making an episode about Dandy infiltrating an alien high school and having to sing and dance. It's absolutely insane and I loved every second of it.

New Digimon Adventure series in the spring.

And I am DESPERATELY hoping this series will ignore the events of series 2....I know they won't, but a flan can DREAM can't they?!

Why? Series 2 was fine. If you want a bad series, you want Digimon Data Squad. Frontier and Xros Wars have had problems but only Data Squad made me stop caring.

Zero 2 was not fine, it had a multitude of plot holes that unlike in season one weren't tied together nicely in the end, Davis was a boring lead who stopped developing after the armor arch(TK & Kari would've been better leads), Gennai's role was annoyingly downplayed, Davis' awful sister appeared more than Mimi, and the full extent of the armors power was barely shown because they decided to bring in DNA evolving for some reason! Which also wasn't developed enough, that episode with Hi/Kari mentioning the possible fusions was a damned tease( as well as teasing Omega/Omnimon). And finally, fuck the epilogue and fuck Tai cutting his glorious hair. It was WAY too happy an ending, and I would've preferred a bit of mystery like the ending of Digimon Adventure.

And while I haven't finished Savers, I still liked what I've seen. I'd prefer Masaru/Marcus being a bad ass Digimon fighter to watching another Not-Tai try to seem cool and failing anyday. Takato is not part of the list of Not-Tais of course, as his genuine dorkyness gave him a genuine spark.

It was always made apparent that Armor Digivolving was a non-standard way of going about things and we did see it taken to it's natural conclusion in Frontier (Spirit Digivolution is basically the same damn thing). Also, wasn't Mimi back home in America at this time? Davis's sister WAS awful though. Just... awful. My only complaint? The stuff about the Dark Ocean was never resolved, despite it clearly supposed to tie into the Dark Seeds and everything else.

-My- biggest grief with the entire damn show is how things get really damn murky when they start comparing the various stages. It's supposed to go...

- Egg
- Fresh
- In-Training
- Rookie
- Champion
- Ultimate
- Mega

... but then we get things like Gatomon (A champion) being as week as a rookie and Angewomon (an Ultimate) only being on par with a Champion. It especially gets crazy in Frontier, where Human Spirits are Champions, Beast are Ultimate, Fusion is Mega... and then they go -two- levels beyond that, still calling it Mega. We need something beyond Mega, especially now that Pokemon is using the same term. Call it Supreme or something. Just stop pretending that it only goes up to Mega and standardize that shit.

Xros Wars is especially bad about this shit. Shoutmon is rookie, x2 is Champ, x3 is Ultimate, x4 is Mega... and then it goes up to like X1000 (really something like x7).

@AshburnerX

The only way Davis sister could have deserved her screen time was if they made her a digi-destined as well, otherwise she was not needed. I feel her only need for existence was for Kari to yell at Davis for not appreciating his sibling more. And yeah Mimi was in the states, but even so she deserved more screen time than Davis' awful awful sister whose name I don't care for because she sucks.

The Dark Ocean and the Dark Seeds are probably the biggest plot holes in the series, as for the Dark Ocean from what I've read that episode was meant to be a special filler episode that was just supposed to be creepy and never resolved but UHP- they made it canon and ruined everything. Especially how Gatomon was able to Super evolve, HOW?! They explained they got rid of their crest power to seal he gates yet some how she's able to do it right off the bat! The crest thing was also just a weak explanation for why they couldn't super evolve, especially since the crests didn't exist nor were necessary since they were made to merely hone the Digidestined's powers! Hell, all that would do was depower them for a while, they prove themselves worthy of their element of harmony, and then get new super forms that get terrible toys based on them! While joking, it pissed the hell out of me that we never saw HeracleKabuterimon, that was my favorite trading card.

And the Dark Seeds is another can of worms altogether, that was actually a failed attempt to tie the show with the famed Wonderswan series. Prior to 02's events, Ken and famed protagonist and debatle Gary Stu Ryo fought and defeated Milleniumon: A fusion of Chimeramon and Machinedramon(believe it or not, less ugly than most Xros evolutions). It actually would've been cool if the whole series was building up to bringing back said villain. And you know who was one of his minions in the games? DAEMON! Which would've made his random invasion of Earth make complete sense...instead of making the viewers wonder why this happened and why wasn't he the main villain? It also would've worked seeing as how Daemon was the main villain in the manga the series was based on. Instead, we have Myotismon cloning Ken's seed(which just seems unnecesarry as there were like a million) which he shouldn't have known about given he was dead in during this time of events nor had control over as he wasn't the villain who freaking made them! And would he have the power to control them, he was killed TWICE before this and barely had enough power to control that creepy friend of Cody's dad. Final note on this, you'd think finding out what all the other spores did would be a sub-plot too but NOPE completely glossed over.

OOH- the destiny stone arc was just...just a waste of time. Not because of Blackwargreymon oh no, but because after they were all destroyed Mr.Dragongod REPLACED THEM ALL LIKE THAT! We wasted a whole arc on these things, and you could just replace them in an instant? Laaaaaaaaaame.

Gatomon made NO damn sense in 02, especially since her rookie form had almost zero screen time. She should've de-digivolved into Salmon, and stayed that way for the whole season and be self-consciense about not being a Champion.

Definitely yes to the evolution system, needs a complete over haul, especially with Omegamon.

As for Frontier I will admit it was probably the best of the even numbered series, but I feel knocking out the symbiotic tamer monster relationship and replacing it with Ronin Wariors was a bit of a stretch. Also Botamon and Neemon were just pointless tools for exposition and comic relief. And why didn't they have powers? Made no damn sense.

And on the topic of Xros wars, what bugged me most was not the evolutions themselves(though they were bad toy commercials, even for Bandai's standards), it was what the only thing stopping Mikey(not calling him his real name as its too obvious a tribute) was his own imagination. That...was kinda weak. Don't get me wrong imagination is great, but the other series protagonists had to go through numerous emotional and phsyical trials to master their evolutions and all he has to do is go around a loophole? Weak. And while I've seen just a little, it looked like he knew WAY too much about what to do with his Xrosloader, where's the room to grow?

wow, just wow you guys. I am glad that I was never really into digimon past season 1 or 2.

on an adorable note I just finished watching season 2 of "I Dont Have Very Many Friends NEXT" which was awesome and I am sad that there isnt anymore because the show is totally the most adorably awesome thing ever and I love it to death and back.

It is a road that leads to madness, be lucky you never crossed it. But seriously check out series 3 Tamers, its creepy as hell, made me rethink existence at age 11 and I fucking loved it!

As for Haganai I'll take your word that its good but...I'm kinda sick of shows with the "guy with scary face can't make friends" protagonist. The only one I can think of by name is Toradora, but there are a good chunk like this that use a similar protagonist. OT there was one real old manga that took it to a satirical extreme called Angel something, anyone rememer the name?

I stopped watching after the season with the little girl that gets like mind-raped by the d-reaper and shit.

as for Haganai, find the dub, it is AMAZING!

Kill la Kill: I'm not so sure about this. My wife giggled throughout episode 1, but I don't know if this is for me. The idea of mixing a shonen-style anime with this school stuff is interesting, but the zaniness and fanservice aren't exactly my cup of tea. I may give it one more episode to try, but this might be something my wife can watch without me.

The WTF factor keeps going up. I watched the whole thing, but I don't know if I was enriched by the experience. However, I was powerless to do otherwise.

It's a spectacle, no doubt about it.

As for Haganai the only real gripe I have with it is the stupid OH YOU'RE CONFESSING I MUST NOT HAVE BEEN LISTENING trope. The show leans on it, and leans on it hard.

that was a bit strange, I felt like the end of season 2 basically chalked it up to Kodaka didn't want to pick anyone for fear of it tearing the group apart, nor did he have the heart to say why he would not pick any of the ladies. It doesn't help that by the end of Season 2 we find out that Kodaka has made an impact on the student council and most of the students in the entire academy actually making him one of the more popular people in school. If they ever get a 3rd season its going to be fun!

I've read the spoilers for the novels, as they're finished. I won't spoil anything for you, but there's a reason he acts the way he does and it's all spelled out in the non-adapted volumes.

So its the same thing that happens with all light novel adapted series...
