Video Game News and Miscellany

Well the Bioware game just got delayed to mid-November.
Oh fuuuuck, now I gotta make decisions about my spending budget. Thanks for the info.

If there was a game company I was going to stop supporting, it would be Squeenix, because most of their games are dreadful lately. They're every bit the congolomerate that EA is, though not as bad about microtransactions (Need for Speed on the PS3 was infuriating). There's a limit to the number of games feature androgynous whiny heroes you should be able to release.
Squeenix is making an effort to improve though and get back to when their games were good. They may fail, but at least they're trying. EA doesn't give a shit about anyone.

Me: "Dragon Age 3 is delayed."
Wife: "Oh. That sucks. To when?"
Me: "November."
Wife: "That's not too bad."
Me: "Three days before Pokemon."
Wife: *rolls eyes* "Greeeaaaaaat."

Those Pokemon devs need a clean break. The next time Nintendo releases a new handheld, reboot it. All old Pokemon are gone. They need to start fresh so more time can be spent making a better game and less spent on all that backwards balancing nonsense.

That's never gonna happen. Too many of the first gen are considered classics, not to mention Nintendo just had Game Freak update all of the Pokemon to 3D cel-shade models. The closest we'd get is another Pokemon Black/White where none of the old Pokemon are available until post-game.

I'm not sure how much work they really put into backwards balancing though. While you can go through single-player with practically any group of Pokemon, only certain ones out of the 900 or so are worth a damn in multi-player. If they are working on backwards balancing, they're not doing a good job.

Not to mention, Pokemon isn't exactly unique anymore. Hell, it wasn't unique back when it was big. It was just more popular. Shin Megami Tensei did Pokemon first, and still does it better, but it's not as popular. Pokemon has a strong foothold in its legacy Pokemon, stuff people get nostalgic over, and each installment adds Pokemon instead of replacing them. If they ditched them all for new monsters entirely, I think it would kill the series.

You know what to do.

Stop being a filthy casual gamer.
Or, you know, like I said. PIRATE DA3 for PC. If you *have* to, you can hook a controller up to it so your mensa-equivalent computational system can pretend to be a vacuous cheerleader console. She gets her Dragon Junior High Romance Sim 3, you get your Midlife Crisis Pets:Failure to Launch Edition, and EA doesn't make any money out of any of it.

Our PC can't run it. Even if it could, wife wants her irrelevant decisions from DA and DA2 to carry over, and they're on PS3. (Seriously, the protagonists of both gamers wandered off into the wilderness for no fucking reason? Her character was the goddamn queen. "Oops, she went missing!" Anderfel isn't anywhere near Fereldan or Kirkwall. And nothing you decide in DA2 means shit.) Again, her money, not mine.

The only way EA's not making money with that off my wife is if she buys it pre-owned from Gamestop later in the year ... which could happen if she prioritizes Pokemon.

Money's not the issue; it's time. Late November and through December tend to be shit for free time, so she wasn't looking to have two new games to play at the same time. That time of year is such a shitfest anyway, I may just not get the new Pokemon until after Christmas.

In any case, wooo, Shadow of Mordor! So long as reviews indicate that the nemesis system does what it's cracked up to do.[DOUBLEPOST=1406090357,1406090268][/DOUBLEPOST]
Even I wouldn't play Dragon Age with a controller.
Considering how they changed the battle system in DA2, I don't think mouse support really mattered. No more top-down view. I think they're bringing it back for DA3. I don't know. Not my problem.

Question for people: what if DA3 is good? Like, really good, old Bioware good? Then you continue to pirate it to spite EA, or do you support Bioware again if they're going to go back to making quality games?

The taint of chaos is upon them. Nothing is left but exterminatus.

Seriously though, there's like, NO chance of Bioware doing good. They've done such shit for so long. They're even the reason Warhammer Online went bad so quickly - EA basically scrapped Mythic and put Bioware in charge of running it.

I would hold DA3 to a high, almost unreachable standard. Like, straight 11s across the board from every reviewer ever. Anything less than that, and I'm not interested.

Nope, they've burnt up all their good will. If they start making not-terrible games again, it'll be too little, too late.

It's like you once had a really good friend, you always had fun together, and then one night, while you're asleep, he just shits in your mouth. And when you wake up in horror, and try to scream what the fuck, he tries to do it again, and again.

Even if years later he finally stops trying to shit in your mouth and starts being a bro again, he's still always the dude that shat in your mouth. There's no coming back from that.

That was freakin' brilliant.

You know that EA has already come out and said that you probably won't be able to upload your saves this time around because of incompatibility issues, right? They are instead making an app that will let you pick your decisions and THAT will make something you can load into the next game.

As for me... TellTale Presents The Walking Dead: Season 2 - Episode 4. I finished it but YET AGAIN there is a bug that doesn't compare my decisions and didn't show me the "Next time of the Walking Dead" thing ether. So I'll have to complete the last segment AGAIN.

If their games are such shit, maybe you guys shouldn't play them at all. I understand acquiring them to see if they're worth getting in the first place, but if the consensus is that they're not worth it no matter what, why even bother pirating in the first place? Aren't you then still wasting your time on the shitty game?

I mean, when I quit after Mass Effect 3, I quit in total. Not playing this crap anymore. My wife said I can do a run of DA3 when she's done--no thanks. It's all hers. I'm voting with my wallet, my time, all of it. I'm out.[DOUBLEPOST=1406111659,1406111559][/DOUBLEPOST]

Well, that's fucking stupid. On the other hand, if I was going to play DA3, I suppose it would benefit me since I never finished DA2 before I sold it and deleted my save.

I have Disney Infinity. I have every figure for it. The kids love it to the point that they lost all access to controller games for the Summer due to fighting over getting to play. I don't want to spend any more money on Disney Infinity.

Goddammit Disney.

Well, I don't. I haven't bought or played an EA game since... uh... hrm.. Wow, Warhammer Online, I guess, in 2008. But I do acknowledge they have games/franchises other people want to buy (like I can hardly fault some people for wanting the Sims 4, the sims may not be my specific bag but they've been quality titles), and won't be dissuaded by the knowledge they are supporting the ruining of the video games industry as a whole by subsidizing other shitty games they don't want and empowering EA to perpetuate awful employee treatment as a de facto industry standard. Hell, if Dungeon Keeper Mobile had actually been as good as the original Dungeon Keeper (or even DK2), I probably would have gotten (read: pirated) it myself... even if it was just a straight port with no other coding other than to make it run on Android/IOS. To paraphrase Bowielee, "Bought (game). Don't care." Monosyllabic grunts of apathy from a man I know for a fact not to be unintelligent.

People want what they want and usually aren't particularly concerned with consequences that are largely removed from them. Remember the twilight zone episode with the button that when you push it you get $200,000, but someone you don't know will die?

I certainly don't intend to stop eating reese's peanut butter cups. But if I could pirate chocolate, I would.

So hey, I didn't know LOL put out a new cinematic trailer.

It's no "Get Jinxed" but it's not bad. I feel like it inaccurately portrays the moving speed of champions.

Wow, they've suddenly moved to a far more Asian inspired aesthetic for their cinematics. I suppose being owned by a Chinese company will have that eventual influence.

They're locked in a 10-way to-the-death fight for the core online gamer audience in China, particularly the competitive eSports players. LoL is winning the numbers game, but DotA 2 and Hearthstone have had a huge amount of success digging into the pro and super-hardcore spaces, which is where all the money in Chinese gaming actually is. And then there are all the local MMOs chomping up everyone else. So Riot is fighting for every advantage theyTencent can muster.

Square Enix needs to check it's meds because right now it's completely bipolar. On the one hand it's releasing great stuff like Hitman Absolution, Tomb Raider, and Bravely Default. On the other it has at least a dozen cash in mobile titles like Theater Rythem: Final Fantasy, that slot machine FF title, and just generally over-charged ports of past successes... while refusing to bring like half of their stuff over to America, like the Rocket Slime sequels, Dragon Quest 10, and other stuff. I -get- why they were focused on FF13 for so long: they dumped a shit ton of money into the engine and only just made it back. But until they learn where the market's at, they will never get any real traction.

Ironically, Square's inability to gain traction is one of the leading reasons why no one is buying a PS4 in Japan: they want a killer game from Square but they won't be getting any until KH3.

Hitman Go was actually a really great mobile game. Massively different experience, essentially Hitman re-created as a puzzle-based board game, but lots of fun.

Yeah, seriously. How about instead of another 6 re-treads of Final Fantasy, they release maybe a Front Mission compilation with improved translation (apparently half the story was missing in FM4). FM3 and FM4 were barely promoted at all over here yet they were still fairly successful. I'm sure there's a market for a turn-based tactical game featuring customizable mechs out there.

And what they're doing to the Legacy of Kain franchise is kind of infuriating. "Yes, let's take one of the most story-heavy dark fantasy games out there with a compelling anti-hero and compelling mythos, and turn it into a meaningless PVP game like GUNZ: The Duel." Yes, I know that MOBA games are very popular, especially in Asia. But it'd be kind of like seeing Ridley Scott's dark fantasy movie "Legend" redone as a supernatural tween romance, a la Twilight.

Not successful enough to get FM5, but we did get the FM remake on the DS and I -guess- Front Mission Evolved too. Though FME is shit... best way to play the game is to just hide behind a shield and use a shoulder gatling to fight EVERYTHING.

When they re-released FF7 they could have at least tarted up the polygons/textures a little bit to Crisis Core levels instead of just the same PS1 console rip they did on us in the 90s. All the music was even midi, so One Winged Angel didn't even have any lyrics.

I like Theatrhythm ...

And wow, after that E3 trailer they're not bringing Dragon Quest 10 to the U.S.? I've never played a Dragon Quest game and that trailer piqued my interest.

FFXV looks good, but I'll wait to hear about it first. KH3 ... I may or may not get. 3D got me caring again, but if they're going to continue dicking people along with half-finished endings, I'll pass. Would really like a new Dissidia. I actually hate that Squenix is making stuff I'm interesting in again. I had hoped I'd washed my hands of them, but now they're pulling me back.

That's dumb as shit. That bike game wasn't even that good; it was just a neat way to close out disc 1.

And that's just fucking lazy. Even the PS1 version has lyrics. Squenix has this superstition going on that if they actually remake FF7, as in put any effort into it at all, that will be the end of Final Fantasy. That game is 17 years old and they're terrified that if it's resurrected, it'll be the end of them. They pretend to like money, as can be seen in their shitty mobile structure, but actually don't, as can be seen by their shitty mobile structure.

It's something of an open secret at this point that they are working on a full remake of Final Fantasy 7, slated to come out after 15. They need the money and EVERYONE wants it.

Yeah, it got pretty decent reviews but apparently FM4 only sold like half a million copies.

Front Mission 5 was supposed to be the best of the series. I'd have really liked to play it. FM3 was good but a bit random and the characters were, in the vast majority, really annoying psychopaths. It's summed up rather nicely here:

A lot of that was the old guard not wanting to retread old ground for creative reasons: they felt remaking 7 would be admitting they had no more ideas. But now the only person left you could call "old guard" is Nomura and he's the youngest of them. Everyone else left to do their own things (Sakaguchi formed Mistwalker, Uematsu has a new band in the Earthbound Papas).

Same here. I never finished it the first time, I'm definitely not going to buy it again.

I have a problem finishing Final Fantasy games. See, there's that point where you need to do some grinding before the Final Final dungeon, and pretty much all of the sidequests are available. So of course, that's what you do. Except, well, most of them suck, and they're way harder than actually just finishing the game, so I putz around on them for a while and then just stop playing.

This is true for Final Fantasy VII, I've never gone further than disc 1 in FFVIII, never finished FFX (the celestial weapons - fuck you!), haven't finished FFXII, haven't finished FF Tactics... Star Ocean 2, I stopped play Star Ocean 3 before the first battle, I quit Xenosaga at the "running from Gnosis" part...
