Happy Finnish Independence Day everyone!

Did you know:

It is tradition in Finland to light two candles on the window on Independence Day. The tradition of the lit candles is very old and pre-dates the independence of Finland. It is not precisely known how or when it began, but the tradition has been used for several purposes throughout the ages, from marking royal celebrations under Swedish rule, as a sign of defiance against oppression under Russian rule, to marking safe houses for Finns who were travelling to receive military training in Germany during WWI in order to fight a war of national liberation against Russia. The current tradition of lighting the candles on Independence Day was formally established in 1927, and on December 6th you can see two blue-white candles lit on the window of many Finnish houses between 6 and 8 pm.

I got the wi-fi going again. Was a bass-ackwards way of doing it, but it works: old router now splits cable modem between two primary computers, while wi-fi router is a separate link from said old router, strictly for wi-fi devices. Speed's probably gonna suck for the wi-fi connections, but I got it going again until I can figure out why the newer router wasn't being "seen" by the Win7 machine.

I finally built up the courage to check on the huge assignment for my writing class I was sure that I bombed and discovered I had done far better than I expected I would. It's still a C, but I had expected an F considering it's only half the length it should have been. With this, I actually stand a chance of passing the class.

One of our rats clips his own nails, the other did not. My wife and I finally got tired of being carved apart when he wanted cuddles, so we held him and clipped his nails for him. It was ... not fun.

However! A couple days later, my wife pointed to the cage. He was clipping his own nails.

What doesn't he like about nail clipping?

When we do it? Probably being held in place and having each of his fingers/toes held individually. I was careful not to clip anywhere close to the root--just removed the curling ends.

Why didn't he do it himself? I have no idea. Maybe it just never occurred to him. He's not the first rat we've had to do this for, who then learned to do it himself. He also doesn't clean his tail, but he will clean his brother's tail. They're weird.

My friend used to sing "D is for Degree and that's good enough for me!"

Pretty sure when I was in school, people liked to refer to it as "D = Done!" But I like the Cookie Monster theme better.

Dunno if my school was different about it or something, but you could only have 0-2 D's and still get the degree (my degrees were 1 D maximum).

Mine's all classes must be higher than a C to count, not even a C-, or you have to take the class over again another semester.

Wife's car has a random light on. That means I take it to the repair shop with no chance of a ride back.

The victory? Dropping it off and then walking three blocks to the local coffee shop, where I can sip eggnog latte and VPN into work like a boss. These are the days that I feel like I'm living in the future.

While checking the front desk mail today I found a letter addressed to "Trolley". Apparently a guest's young daughter loved the trolley themed bus we use for shuttle-rides up to Universal Studios.
She drew a picture for Trolley and her parents wrote us a letter to let us know what was going on. So I took some time, wrote up a nice reply as "Trolley" and sent her some photos.

Hi, Taryn!

Thank you SO much for the picture you made me. It really made my day! I want to send you a picture too, so here is one of me and my driver. I really miss you! I hope you visit me again soon. And say thank you to your Mom and Dad for writing to me!

Went to a resale store (pawn shop) near my house. They had a really good selection of video games, all priced pretty well, saw that all 3DS games were only $10...and that they had a copy of Pokemon X.

I am nostalgia-ing so hard right now, since this is the first Pokemon game I've REALLY gotten into since the original Red/Blue/Yellow.

Make sure to head on over to the pokemon thread, and let me know if you want a specially bred pokemon.

I convinced my wife to get Disney Infinity for the kids (me) for Christmas, as my son will like the play and my daughter will like the sandbox. I was trying to research which add-on packs will be the best to go with it and discovered that the magic bands we got when we went to Disney World two weeks ago will actually unlock dragons and whatnot from the new Fantasy Land. Sweet.

I work retail. I have three vacation days this week. I don't go back to work until Thursday, I don't work weekends.

Maybe this should be a Major victory.

4yr-old son decided he doesn't want to use the potty seat any more.
We weren't trying to wean him or anything, he just got tired of putting it on/taking it off and decided he's over the whole thing.

I did manage to get some writing done last night. It was nice. I am stuck on a part, but I think I had a good idea last night, before I was (naturally) interrupted, so I'll have to try it out.
