Al Jean said they were simply going to retire the character. Maybe Bart and Lisa move up a grade?

Been watching this unfold, people weren't sure whether this was a publicity stunt or legit.
Now she joins Chef in the "won't see that character any more" section.

By retiring the character they remove a lot of possible school-related hijinks. Or they have Bart focus on tormenting Skinner Armin Tamzarian exclusively.

I think not retiring the character would be tasteless considering how long the Simpsons has been on the air.

I recently saw her in blackface on Hulu. Can people do that now without getting into trouble... or is it just such an obscure show that no one notices she's doing it?

Does anyone remember when the Simpsons were just short animations between segments of the Tracy ulman show?
I first saw them as the final short in of one of those animation collections that would tour movie theaters back in the late 80's. At the time, I knew Tracy Ulman had a show, but I wasn't watching it.

I know literally nothing about the Tracy Ulman show other than that the Simpsons started there, and I assume someone named Tracy Ulman was in it.

Tracy Ullman was this comedian that had a lot of different characters she would dress up as, and they all had the same voice and none of them were funny.

I don't know, I think I laughed once or twice during her skits.

I only watched the show for the animated tidbits though.

Which, I suspect, a lot of others did, and why the Simpsons emerged form that.

Wasn't Ullman super bitter about the Simpsons' success outside of her show?
From the Simpsons Wiki...

Ullman filed a lawsuit in 1992, claiming that her show was the source of The Simpsons success and therefore should receive a share of the show's profit. "I breast-fed those little devils," Tracey Ullman once said of The Simpsons. She wanted a share of The Simpsons' merchandising and gross profits and believed she was entitled to $2.5 million of Fox's estimated $50 million in 1992. The Fox network had paid her $58,000 in royalties for The Simpsons as well as $3 million for the 3½ seasons her show was on the air. Eventually the courts ruled in favor of the network.
So... yeah. She is/was super bitter about it.

I don't know about bitter, but she sued Fox. She is still lifelong friends with most of the production team and cast. She just felt Fox underpaid her for the Simpsons royalties.
