Rant VIII: The Reckoning

Ok, so, bit of news... I'm still probably going to be unemployed at the month, but they're really jerking everyone around about it. I work in sales, alongside another person who holds the same position as me. We've been told that one of us is gone, and whoever has the better numbers at the end of the month is going to be the one to stay.

Only this month is being counted. My previous performance has always been stellar, but this month has been a rough one. I spent the first week of it out on sick leave with a terrible flu, putting me behind, and then was out again when my mom had a heart attack, and was in and out of the hospital during that time, requiring that I spend some of my paid time off to look after her. Now, with only one week left in the month, it's all but impossible for me to catch up, much less pull ahead. The cynic in me would say that's why they chose this month as a litmus and not previous performance, since I've always had a feeling that the new general manager doesn't like me, for reasons I've never really been able to put my finger on given the fact that he barely ever talks to me.

I think the hardest part now is gathering the willpower to stay and finish the month rather than just quitting now and just leaving. Our company was bought out about seven months ago with new owners, and they've all been incredibly difficult to work with since.

That's a horrible way for them to decide it. As much as going in is going to suck, applying for something new will be much easier if you are currently employed.

Is there anyone you can talk to in HR about how they're deciding it?

Who has two thumbs and just got fired?

... This guy.

Technically, they're calling it employee downsizing, but it sure feels like being fired.
sorry to hear it bro, if you lived by me I would totally put the good word in for you to be my assistant and keep me from doing horrible things to myself in the pursuit of profit for my company.

I know your industry, and I... I'd actually be ok with that.

Wait, unless it's the science. Is it the science? Because I'd totally let you experiment on yourself. But you live to fucking far away, that's kind of a long commute.

And Squidley, the GM is the best friend of the owner, they don't really have an HR department. When they took over, I had to sign an at-will employment agreement, meaning they can fire me for any reason at any time no matter what.

I woke this morning to a drain backup. When the plumber got here, he noticed where there should be a main drain outside, there was now just dirt fill. Now I have a backhoe in what used to be my driveway. I hope insurance can cover some of this.

So to replace the 2 front Catalytic Converters on my Toyota 4 Runner has cost me $1600 for parts + labor. With another possible $400 for 4 Oxygen Sensors if they need replacing.

I take my Toyota Corolla into the Inspection Station today to get my Sticker and it fails.... because of a bad Catalytic Converter.

What

The

Fuck?

Nope, it's just that both vehicles have over 140k miles. They were bound to fail, but both in the same 6 month period? FML.

Alright, so today I told a close friend that her husband of two years is emotionally and psychologically abusive. That his threatening her daughter's (her daughter is not her husband's daughter) boyfriend is not "protective" and has scared her daughter out of their house. I told her, after thinking it for a while, that her husband doesn't love her. I told her I thought she should leave him.

Shit.

So, remember that downsizing I mentioned that was making my job redundant? Well, turns out that was bullshit. They're firing the employees left over from the previous ownership and replacing them with new staff at reduced pay.

We discovered this when said new staff showed up a week early.

Did they ask you to train your replacement?

No, but I once had to train my boss.

The replacement employees were given the wrong address, they're training at another store.
Man, I'd be tempted to walk. Leave them fuckers in a lurch. Take lots of time off & look for work. Fuck I hate being unemployed.

I only have until Sunday. I'm going to be professional and stay until then.

But I'd love to just walk right now.

You are definitely a professional if you are staying and helping a business that has proven to be liars and cheats. I can't think their other business practices are above board if they'll treat their own people like this.

What a bunch of cock-knuckles.

I'd rather remain professional and allow that to reflect on me than act unprofessional, regardless of their actions.

Well, damn. I just read the synopsis of Bioshock Infinite, and geez, the tear power thing is almost identical to the whole driving concept behind Fade. I know there's nothing knew in the world, and that this concept has been done before, but there are elements that are just too close. Some of the story that I spoiled for myself seems very close to the origin of the chief antagonist in the story. I'm in no way suggesting anything other than convergent evolution, but it makes mine look like a cheap knock-off now.

It's not the first time. I was annoyed the first time I saw Full Metal Alchemist. I had a protagonist with long blonde hair using alchemy based magic to deform things that had to already exist. Nix, back up a little--too similar. Also, I've never read them, but apparently my story's concept of magic is so similar to the Wheel of Time series's concept that we even chose the same verb to describe casting. The scramble suit as depicted in the film version of A Scanner Darkly looked very much like fade's titular power in my mind's eye. Ah well, no one said it had to be unique.

This is the very essence of the idea of the trope - that there are common storytelling plot "tools" that naturally recur in entertainment without any sort of intentional "ripping off" going on.

Way back in the dark ages, when AOL was the online place to be, I started rp-ing in their Red Dragon Inn rooms. I made a character called Dragon Wing because I liked dragons and wanted a screen name I could claim easily. I had people jumping on me in IMs about being a fan of Death Gate Cycle. I'd never heard of the series, book, or character (still haven't read anything by Weis & Hickman so I don't know). At the time the closest thing to fantasy novels that I had read were Stephen King books.
