I'd seen this a few times before, but I just felt like watching it again last night. Man, I love this movie. Yeah, all the characters in the group are basically just stereotypes or archetypes, but I think that's part of what makes it fun. Seeing them interact and work together, using the different skills against the Predators was just fun.

There's only two bad things about this movie, though:
-Still no sequel!
-It reminds me of just how bad the Alien vs. Predator movies were and how much it surprises me someone could not only fuck up a golden opportunity, but do it twice.

I too liked Superman vs The Elite a lot more than All-Star Superman. All-Star had some good moments that reminded me a lot of the old Christopher Reeve movies, but overall it felt kinda weird.

Also, that was a hell of a long way to go for a goddamn title pun.

A Good Day to Die Hard

Overall, I liked it. But, in my opinion, it's not really a Die Hard film. I mean, it had similar elements and, I mean, c'mon, it's Bruce Willis, but the plot kind of..killed it for me. It was very much Papa Bear goes to save Baby Bear, which got old for me.
I LOVED the cameo of Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Adorable.

As for action, it was top notch! The stunts were great and non-stop. The opening car/van/tank-ish vechicle chase scene was fantastic! Especially for me because I'm a complete sucker for car chases - I love them. I expected more...I dunno, cussing? Harsh language? And violence for that matter. I mean, don't get me wrong, it was definitely there, just not in the way it's present in the other films (minus the 4th one, of course).

If you like over the top action films, I'd definitely recommend giving this one a go, but if you're looking for a true to form Die Hard...stick with the first one.

That's the thing Freddie Wong did this year... yeah, it's pretty awesome. I especially loved hearing The Protomen during the party scene.

Want to know what's more awesome? Season 2 has been funded on Kickstarter and is already shooting. So more is on the way!

That's pretty awesome cuz I was cracking up during this thing. It had been super cut into a movie and, man, I loved the Law. I have never seen a performance quite like....THAT.

Yeah, they're aiming for 6 TV length episodes, with the season being about 160-180. Considering they only JUST started shooting, we probably won't see anything until May-June at the earliest, depending on how much time it takes them to edit.

If you like this and are a fan of Fallout, I'd recommend Nuka Break. It's a fan film that was continued with a 6 episode series, with another season in the works (thanks to Kickstarter!).

I don't think I'd ever sat down and watched this before. I think once in high school, but that was among a group of friends and I think I was making out with my girlfriend at the time more than watching the movie.

Anyway, I can see why this movie is so reviled. It basically takes bits of 2001, Alien, and The Shining and mashes it all together. There's little here that's original.

At the same time, I can also see why it's a cult hit. The acting is solid enough for what it is, the special effects are quite good (and most still hold up even today), and there's some legitimately creepy moments.

Sam Neil, Lawrence Fishburn, that was enough to make me watch it when it came out. I fall into the cult following for that movie.

I watched this with my kids. "Kind of like the book of the same name" might be a good tagline for it. They happied it up, as per usual with Dahl movies. I hadn't thought about this book in a while, so when I watched it, it made me realize how similar
Life of Pi
was to James and the Giant Peach.

I love Event Horizon. It may not be original, but it's very well out together, and super creepy and fucked up.

I consider it the best movie adaptation of Doom.

Well, I've been in a horror mood lately, so why not?

And this was...well, it wasn't terrible. It wasn't fantastic, either. It was a solid, good movie. Not great, but good. I've seen better horror flicks, but I've seen a LOT worse, too. It had a really clever concept (and like any good horror movie, a good twist at the end that was pretty obvious if you were paying attention) and was pretty creepy. There were a bunch of really blatantly obvious jump scares that I saw coming a mile away. Then again, I've seen so many horror flicks, that might be just me (or a horror fan in general).

But still, I have to say that for a movie that only had a $3 million dollar budget, I'm impressed. With that low a budget (low given big Hollywood movies these days, I mean), it's no surprise it came back with easy profit. It reminds me a bit of the Blair Witch Project, which came out around the same time that horror movies were trying to be these big movies with lots of CG monsters and the sort. For horror, low key is always best. Though, with that said, I'm going to watch the new Silent Hill movie in the next day or two, so we'll see how that compares. Not well, I imagine.

Also, out of curiosity, I skimmed IMDB's comment section on this movie. Good lord, there are a lot of morons on there. Then again, the general comment section on most places on the 'net are pretty much in the "I don't want to live on this planet anymore" category.

I forgot to mention it at the time, but I watched Comic Book Confidential a couple weeks ago. My grandfather bought it for me a while back, well before he died, and I'm kinda sad now that I never got to talk with him about it. It's a really interesting look at the history of the comic book industry, mostly focusing on the fringes and people pushing the limits.

According to IMDB it's from 1988, before any webcomic still existing had started publication. Thinking about that makes me realize just how truly full of crap Gary Trudeau's "comics are dead without newspapers" statement was. Repeatedly, time and time again, comics have found a way to get made. Those who love the medium will continue to make them, one way or another. This isn't some concept that will fade away, people want to tell stories via sequential art, and they will in some form or fashion as long as humanity is making any sort of creative work at all.

Oh, and the movie is really enjoyable as well. The interviews are fascinating and I had no idea about some of the odder niches that comics have found over the years.

The good:
  • Sets, costumes, etc were all gorgeous.
  • Anne Hathaway knocked the role of Fantine out of the park. Actually, she knocked it so far out of the park it orbited once around the Earth and landed at her feet again. Seriously awesome. Her version of I Dreamed a Dream, filmed in a single close-up shot, is nothing short of jaw-dropping.
  • Amanda Seyfried was a pleasant surprise. I saw her in Mamma Mia, but I wondered if she could pull off a role that was more vocally demanding, and she didn't disappoint.
  • The other trained stage singers all did very well. Samantha Barks, Eddie Redmayne etc. Samantha Barks is very hot, too.
  • Sascha Baron-Cohen and Helena Bonham-Carter are riotous as the Thenardiers.
  • Some minor elements from the novel but absent from the stage musical were added, sort of like easter eggs for fans of the book.

The bad:
  • Some good songs were cut. I suppose this is inevitable, given the differences between movies and stage shows, but I'd've liked to hear Dog Eat Dog, for example. Some songs were shortened.
  • Some songs and lyrics were changed for inexplicable reasons. I suppose this might be a nitpick on my part, but what's wrong with sticking with the lyrics everyone knows and loves?
  • Russell Crowe, oh god Russell Crowe. Completely the wrong guy to play the part of Javert, both vocally and otherwise. He's not a bad singer, per se, it's just that his voice doesn't have the resonance to pull off Javert's songs. And no matter how hard he glares, he just doesn't feel imposing or threatening enough.
  • The newly added song, Suddenly, did nothing for me.

The ugly:
  • I never thought I'd say this, but Hugh Jackman failed to impress as Valjean. I think the problem was that they were singing live, and Hugh was too busy acting and was unable to give his singing the necessary attention. His rendition of Bring Him Home is particularly cringe-worthy.
On the whole, I liked the movie, and it's definitely worth watching, especially if you're a fan of the show. But don't expect it to be the same as the stage version, it's a very different beast.

It was... okay. The animation was good, except for Supes. He seemed far more "cartoony" looking than all the others in the film, less definition, rounder eyes. Seriously, this was the strangest thing in this movie. He didn't look like he belonged in the same movie as the rest of the characters in several shots.

The story was... okay. Like I said, it's been done a million times, if you want to do it again do it with either some serious style or throw a new twist into it. This did neither.

The only part I actually was like, "Okay, now THIS is good" was the end when he tricks them into thinking he's gone all evil like. That was very well done and despite the cheesy reveal of "Robots everywhere doing stuff!" it was pretty bad ass.

It didn't have the style nor the substance of All Star (although I'll give you that All-Star was only a pale reflection of the comic), and it doesn't even come close to some of the other DCU releases.

Grade: 2.5 stars out of 5.

I have to agree (mostly) with Ravenpoe . I thought All-Star was corny. Elite was predictable and done, but I found it at least more interesting. Neither were exactly award winning though.

Silent Hill Revelations

Pardon the language, but holy fuck does this movie suck. The special effects are atrocious, the acting is horrendous, the story makes no sense. Worst of all, almost the majority of this movie is exposition. It's people explaining shit left, right, and centre, whether it's explaining motivations or backstory.

Hey, my cousin directed that movie. He made a decent movie with Solomon Kane so I really expected Silent Hill to be a bit more than the absolute trash it ended up being. What an unbearable piece of shit.

Yeah, SH:Revelations makes me sad. While acknowledging it's no masterpiece I really like the first one (although they shouldn't have forced Ganz to use CGI instead of practical fx so often).

I didn't hate A Good Day To Die Hard. I think people are being too hard on it since it's not as good as Die Hard, and not "worthy" of the name or whatever the hell that means. It wasn't as good as Die Hard! That applies to like 95% of good movies!

I thought there was some cool / goofy action stuff. And I liked that the movie was short and didn't overstay its welcome.

That applies to 80% of Die Hard movies.

What I find frustrating about the franchise is how each movie that came after becomes more and more the type of movie the original was trying to get away from. That's not specifically a bad thing, just a bit disappointing.

Yeah, the scope widens each movie. A building, an airport, a city, the eastern seaboard, and now Russia

although it can be argued I guess that Die Hard 4 covers more territory than 5. It only really went from Moscow to Chernobyl.

My brother watched this last night and seemed to pretty much echo you on it. He said where it's trying to be creepy without jump-scares, it does well, but most of the jumps are pretty telegraphed.
