[Webcomic] PVP Discussion

Ironically, today's comic was posted shortly after midnight PDT, along with that blog post from yesterday that the site was back up and functioning normally after the BFE outage last week.

So, I've casually followed PvP off and on over the last 10 years. Never posted on any forums, but I'm laughing enough at recent developments that I'll post now:

1.) Table Titans is the worst shit ever.

- Seriously. How consumed is Kurtz by his ego that he thinks that a comic like TT is going to have any success at all? Abysmally slow update time, combined with a story that just isn't compelling at all. It's honestly almost jerkcity.com levels of bad - except no one tries to make a primary living off jerkcity.

2.) Mary Cagle might have stockholm syndrome.

-Reading this thread really hammers home that point. Kurtz somehow roped in someone that has way more talent than him, and has her stuck doing labor intensive work on projects that suck (under the guise of being a mentor). No doubt her compensation for those projects is nil compared to anything he himself gets out of it. Even from afar, I feel like anyone who can reasonably evaluate talent has to feel very comfortable watching/hearing about their setup. He's definitely holding her back and exploiting her.

3.) The comic never recovered from the idiotic decision to get away from video game based content.

-Comics like penny-arcade (and to a lesser extent cad) were started in the same period PvP was and hit massive success. PvP was on the same path of success by being in that same group, and then inexplicably decided to switch to a bad office gag strip.

4.) Updating the strip on time.

- When your primary means of supporting yourself is a web comic, how do you manage to not keep a buffer several weeks long? A few days long? What the fuck?

I agree, granted Mary Cagle's Kiwi Blitz isn't the best thing in the world, its still great and LEAGUES above what PvP is now. Of course almost ANY webcomic is leagues above PvP but its still a great comic.

I noticed in Scott's blog post yesterday that he said that TT is updating 5 days a week; yet the TT site itself says it updates on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I'm not sure he can count to five.

He's referring to the DnD stories that users submit I believe. Those are updated five days a week.

Also: (from the new readers section of TT)
"Table Titans - The online comic that started it all! Every Tuesday & Thursday"

Started it all?

Isn't that sort of statement reserved for like.. Things that have been around a while? ...And started other things?

This storyline has bothered me. It just doesn't seem like Brent to get this obsessive over this debate. Even if he did prefer star wars over star trek (which is a vibe ive never gotten considering how much he's trashed it), I just can't imagine it'd be that strong of a preference.

Biggest problem with this storyline is that it was a weak premise to begin with, and it's essentially been hammering the same punchline repeatedly for the last week and a half. Making one joke into a multi-strip story arc is just awful writing.

Comics can either do in depth story arcs with occasional punchlines (see: the guest arc that just finished), or they can do once a day gags with new material each day. In this arc, PvP somehow managed to combine the very worst of both styles.

Thumbnails because I don't want to resize the originals, but there's this silly thing called Twitamore that analyzes who you pay the most attention to on Twitter, or something. Kurtz and Gabe have a mutual appreciation society going.

Not to mention all the sweet, sweet cash he raked in last time he admitted that he couldn't run an online store for merchandise from the comic and liquidated all of the stock.

I will NEVER understand how someone so bad at doing his job can still be considered one of the top comics on the web. I know he's getting by on his relationship with Gabe and Tycho, but COME ON GUYS. Cut the dead weight loose, snatch up his servant "protege" while you can, and promote HER.

That predator joke was just okay. JUST okay.
Maybe I'm overanalyzing it, but it didn't make sense. Sexual predators on the internet are too much a part of pop culture for Brent and Francis to be unaware of them. They both know Pedobear and Chris Hanson jokes. So, all that's left is them messing with Cole by pretending to not know what he's talking about, and there's not enough set-up for that to work for me.
