I'm gonna go with Marylon Manson. Not saying the original isn't great which it is, but Marylon Manson's version is the one I grew up on plus I feel the changes he made to the tune were freaking awesome.

The original is great, but Cash's guitar sold me on that version. Those two are neck and neck, but that's what put me over the top.

Manson's comes in a distant 4th.

I feel like the Marilyn Manson cover is a little to similar to the Gravity Kills cover for me to think that he didn't kind of steal some of it. It came out 2 years before Marilyn Manson's cover.

...okay yeah that is probably better. Either way, both versions sound really awesome with noise cancelling head-phones.

I really enjoy Marilyn Manson's version, but for me it has to be Depeche Mode. I normally love Johnny Cash's covers of songs like these (his version of NiN's Hurt remains to be one of the best things I've heard, ever) but this one just feels flat to me.

I have a thing for vocalists with legendary unique voices: J.Cash, D.Bowie, A.Winehouse, L.Armstrong, C.Jackson, M.Jackson etc

I was just coming here to post this. I still love all of Manson's older stuff but Gravity Kills version is far better and as you add, it really sounds like he ripped them off.

Finally took some time to listen to them all, and based on the audio (didn't watch the videos), I have to go with the original as the best version, and Gravity Kills as the best cover. Manson muddied it too much, and Cash's version sounds more like a jam session than something he is pouring his heart and soul into (like he did with "Hurt").

I actually don't like Cash's version at all. I like a lot of his covers but both this one and his cover of U2's "One" are terrible. They sound like he just doesn't like the song.

Also, just as an aside, I actually had the opportunity to see the NiN/Bowie concert in high school, but couldn't scrape up the cash in time. SO SAD :(

Much as I was a fan of his original stuff, whenever Manson covered a song it sounded like he was trying too hard to be edgy and ironic, and it turned me off.

Sweet Dreams, Tainted Love and Golden Years are pretty damn good. Of course they were back when he was doing some damn fine music in general.

Just cause something's David Bowie, doesn't automatically make it awesome. Look, it almost does but Dancing in the Streets proves it wrong. That cover was shitty.

Also, I vote for Depeche Mode.

Yeah, Frank, WTF are you talking about? I literally have no idea what you're responding to. The David Bowie version of Hurt with Trent Reznor?

I meant in this thread. I don't believe anyone said that everything David Bowie does is great, except for you, poe, waaaaay back in the thread.

If he's responding to your post form that far back, he really should have quoted it, otherwise he just comes of as someone blurting random arguments.

I'll find it hilarious if he's referring to I'm Afraid of Americans as being a cover, seeing as it's an original Bowie song.

True enough, but really, if you told someone with any sense that Mick Jagger and David Bowie were doing a cover to a song their response should be a unanimous shout of joy.
I think he's talking about this
