Byzantium, Antioch and Jerusalem hardly balance out all the centers of learning in western Europe and MANY in the Americas.[DOUBLEPOST=1354591955][/DOUBLEPOST]And you have Irish monks that saved more knowledge of the Roman world than there were in the outposts of the Levant.

I just did in my previous post.
I'm not so sure. You made the claim that people would have been better off, centuries past without religion or monarchies, but you haven't offered any viable alternative.

It's also been proven on multiple occasions where they killed/silenced scientists/people who could disprove their beliefs. There would have been plenty of other financial options other than Churches and Monarchies.
To be honest, that's not a very strong case. Some of the most prominent scientific minds of ages past were also highly religious and even support by the church/ruling goverments. At the Science and Technology Museum in Shanghai, there's an entire wall dedicated to Newton filled with his biblical quotes. You said they're have been plenty of other financial options? From where? You've just taken out the authority from the country and the only other entity that might of had some money to spend.

Like I said, if it's beneficial to them. Ex: Stem Cell research? Nope cause it goes against their belief. Could it save millions? Yep. Do they care? Nope.
Churches tend to be against Fetal Stem Cell Research, not against all Stem Cell Research. Since by their belief that is a child being killed to get the stem cells.

Depends on who you ask, you can find quotes on both sides of the matter when it comes from Religious leaders. The fact that there's even a Con-Side when there isn't child death involved is where I draw pause on Religious Belief Ignorance.

As I said, not going with broad-stroke generalities like you are, they TEND to be against Fetal, but not Adult. With everything you have people that are against something because it's "witchcraft" or "magic" because they don't understand what it is. Reporting on Stem Cell research doesn't always make the distinctions about what basis (Fetal/Adult) the research is working on

I broadstroke because I grew up in it, saw the damage it does, and feel (personally) that we'd be better off as a species without having to believe in fairy tales as some kind of restricting reality. If I'm wrong, then it was at least my choice, my own thoughts, not something brainwashed into me.

You know, I think you and I hold the same views on religion. However, my distaste isn't in religion itself, but rather people. People are vile, terrible, panicky, and willingly ignorant, they just cling to religion because it's easy to do so. Religion itself didn't do that, people did. Religion, like anything, can be used for good or ill, depending on who holds the reigns.

I once thought of religion as a stepping stone we as a species used to help us cope with the strange world around us. I believe you feel that we as a species have grown beyond the need for it, but looking at the throngs of ignorant masses, I'm not so certain we have.

Poking around on eBay to see if any of my SNES games are worth anything, turns out people are buying two of them (Earthbound and Harvest Moon) for about 150 bucks at the low end. Demon's Crest was about 40 or so on bids, and most others were about 5-20 bucks. I hate selling my childhood, but that's some solid cash.

I loved Harvest Moon as a kid. Before I had enough money to buy the game I made a farm out of shoeboxes and cardboard on the floor of my room.drove my mom crazy.

I actually do own those carts as well as a few others. Rare and valuable NES ones as well. They sit happily on my display shelf next to my Rare PSX disks. Even in my hardest times when I had to pawn items to get from month to month I never gave them up, now that we're financially secure, I'm glad I never did.

Do not do it, whatever you do with the money now will not be worth it in the long run.

My youngest son isn't what you'd call a -gamer-. His older brother is and the younger one mostly plays because the older one does. However I introduced him to my SNES copy of Harvest Moon and he's been hooked ever since. He now has the SNES, N64, Gamecube and DS version all completed and keeps a rotation of games going between each of them. This year for Christmas he's going to be getting the one for the Wii. I'm debating getting him Rune Factory but not sure it'll be the same draw for him.

Do you use emulators for any of those, or do you actually have working systems and carts/disks for them?
Emulator for the SNES/N64 copy because we don't own working consoles but do own working carts of both. The Gamecube, Wii and DS versions are all owned and played on their original console. This goes for most NES/SNES/N64 games they play, I own the carts, but don't have working systems to play them on sadly. I always eye those Retro Console remakes that do play old carts at the gameshops though.

Strange coincidence, we've been clearning out the attic and garage recently and I've been bringing in old figures/statues and video games that I've had in storage for a while since we have a bit of room for display now. Once everything is up I think I'll post a few pics of the retro games collection.

Honestly, a lot of rare games are going down in value thanks to the Virtual Console, PSN, Xbox Live, and re-released HD collections. It's still worth keeping a game for sentimental reasons but we're eventually going to hit a point when just about everything is going to be easily available. It's just a matter of WHEN the companies wise up, not IF.

My fondest gaming wish right now? Nintendo releases Pokemon games on the VC and includes the ability to transfer Pokemon from game to game with something... maybe a cheap PokeRanch apps.

NO FAIR YOU GUYS. Having a debate about Hobbes and the social contract vs religion and despotism AFTER 6 PM CENTRAL.

When I was a kid, I sold my Sega Genesis and all of my games (including the Sonic And Knuckles combo-cart!) so that I could afford to buy a Virtual Boy.

.... I was a dumb kid.

I've regretted it ever since. I've never sold any of my games or systems since.

With my first novel coming out in February, I've started thinking of ways to promote it. Today, I looked at a folder I have of every sketch or piece of art of Dill. I've got over a dozen, each from a different artist, including my cover artist.

So, I'm thinking of doing a "Daily Dosage of Dill" in February, posting a link on Twitter to one of the sketches. I'll probably ask more formally as the time gets closer, but if any artist is interested in getting in on this, let me know. :)
