Things you never thought you'd love

You know, like your kids.

I just bought a new toothbrush.

A Phillips Sonicare FlexCare toothbrush. I bought it on a whim after it was suggested by a friend, and it turned out to be a damn expensive whim.

But now that I've used it for the first time, holy crap. I've never used anything but a manual toothbrush, and I'm never going back. My teeth feel so clean!

So to keep this from being a post about nothing more than toothbrushes and unwanted kids, what little things have you ever tried or bought that turned out to be vital?

My iPod touch. I wanted an MP3 player for jogging, and my choices were either some crappy ones with bad reviews or $100 more for an 8gb iPod. I ended up using it more for reading and web surfing without having a drag around books or a laptop more than I use it for actually listening to music. I want to upgrade to a nook at some point in the future.

*Getting a device that makes me "constantly connected" did come with drawbacks, such as last stalkerish girlfriend who expected to be in constant contact with me at all times regardless of whether I was doing something important job or school related.

Yoga. I always thought it would make me feel really annoyed and impatient. It just wasn't my idea of exercise. Now I love it. It sets the tone for my whole day, and it's easier to do anything and everything. I just feel so limber.

General Duty. Now that I'm Major Crimes bitch, I miss General Duty so fucking bad.

I love you General Duty. I miss corralling drunks.

Research.

It's the most boring thing I could have thought of before going back to school. Now I can't wait to start the research and get my annotated bibliography ready for my next project.

I really gotta start getting into that. My friend had always been a scrawny little thing in college. After college, she got heavily into yoga, to the point of becoming an instructor. She looks the same when you see her, but now it's like every inch of her body is muscle. Her abs are rock hard. I never thought yoga could do stuff like that.

My Kindle. Crazy impulse purchase that turned out to be really awesome and got me back into reading again.

Raising Hope The previews made this show look awful, but I decided to start watching the first season on Netflix and I'm glad I did. The show just has a charm about it.

Raising Hope was created by the same guy who created My Name is Earl.

There are a ton of references back to that tragically cancelled too soon show in Raising Hope.

Yeah, I highly recommend it. I'm not able to do it as much as I would like, but a 15-minute session here and there keeps me feeling limber and strong. I'm more aware of my breathing and my posture. Even when I'm not doing yoga, I can feel myself moving my naval "up and in" the way I'm supposed to when I'm doing a vinyasa routine.

The Boondocks cartoon series. The newspaper comic rarely got anything but an eyeroll from me... the tv series is complete nonstop ironic satire genius.

I don't know why GB but that surprises me.

Also I'm going to second the sonicaire. It's not that my teeth feel cleaner (I was a pretty vigorous brusher before) but it's the fact that I can be that much more lazy, just setting the toothbrush in an area. NO MORE BRUSHING.

I'm holding out for Dentics before I upgrade from my standard toothbrush.

Indian food and vegetarian food. I'm not a veg-head, and will not likely ever be one, but there are so many wonderful vegetarian Indian dishes that I can eat without the thought of meat. Chole masala, dals, aloo tikka, aloo-anything, chakris, etc. - all so delicious. Having said that, my favorite Indian dish is easily Tandoori chicken. It's amazingly good. Before I met my wife, I thought Indian food meant Curry powder or some sort of gross concoction of organs and strange spices. I even make my own garam masala mix at home from whole toasted spices. What took some getting use to was cardamon, clove, and cinnamon in savory dishes. Now Indian and authentic Mexican food compete for my love. Cilantro and peppers FTW!

Sushi. As a staunch hater of fish in almost all of its cooked forms (a well-seared but rare in the middle Ahi being one of the very few exceptions), I am constantly amazed by how good simple fish, with a few other simple ingredients can be. Of course, bad sushi can be amazingly bad, but the same can be said for most any food.

The 2010 Nissan Versa hatchback. When I rented one, I thought it was going to be a tiny, noisy, econobox Aztek wannabe.
I discovered the engine was a bit growly, but that was it. Plenty of room, handles startlingly well, good on gas, controls are all reasonably placed. I had to grudgingly admit to liking it.
