[Other] Halforums Heist

" Come Marten, time is our enemy today, into the depths below if we are to catch our grouse before it's cooked." and with that he prys open the sewer, strikes a torch, "Wizards first" and descends into the murk below.

Ran shakes hands with Renny.

"Hey, just remember. Ran Riddleson. I saved your life. You owe me if I get in trouble. Ok byeeeeee"

Ran waddles off after his companions.

"Do y'all religious types have spells to help with the stink? Nah, didn't think so"

He follows down the sewer

[Ooc: just so everyone is aware, Ran has no healing. His spells are mostly centered around trickery and utility. His uselessness knows no bounds. I love him]

Charity

While the others pursue the clue that leads to the sewers, Charity spends a moment to tend to her wounds as best she can, and prays to Chauntea while she does. She follows the rest down the sewers without complaint, even if she still looks a little rough.

Spending a hit die to heal for 11 HP.

Question, do we know what happened to the Xanathar thugs from the bar brawl? Are they alive? Thinking about using disguise self as the one the started the fight or I could go with one of the corpses from the hideout.

They were kicked out of the tavern.

The party descend into the sewer at the end of a dark alley, despite the late morning. This is not how any of them expected their day to go, but there they were, ankle deep in the muck running underneath Waterdeep. There is no natural light down here. Only Ty, the half-elf, can see in the very dim light down here.

Ty:
A putrid stream flows along this sewer tunnel, which leads in two directions. In one direction, you see a tiny symbol drawn on the wall in yellow chalk: a palm-sized circle with ten equidistant spokes radiating out from its circumference.

That's why I lit a torch. Mamma said learn the light cantrip, but I was cool, I learned illusions.

Assuming everyone is on board with Marten:

After an hour of following signs through the tunnels, the party come to a three-way intersection where a ladder leads up into a stone shaft capped by a circular metal cover. One of the familiar chalk symbols is marked on a wall nearby, and floating near the symbol is a spherical, grapefruit-sized creature with a bulging central eye and four stumpy eyestalks. It bares its teeth at the six adventurers...

"Well that solves the riddle of Xanathar. That my friends is the personal plaything of a beholder. Kill it quickly before it tells Xanathar everything it sees!"

Brad unsheathes his rapier and attempts to stab the gazer in the central eye (10 to hit) and misses as the gazer is too small and is gently bobbing. "I should have aimed where it was going to be, not where it was."

Brad's rapier slices underneath the gazer as it bobs up. Its eye stalks waggle and writhe as two beams fire from two of the four eye stalks. One beam strikes Charity and the other strikes Erythro. Charity is hit with a dazing ray and is charmed (but speed is halved and attacks are with disadvantage). The gazer seems like a pretty cool frood, Charity...

Erythro is struck by a fear ray and is frightened.

(Everyone but Brad is up!)

Marten swings his mace at the gazer, bu the little bugger is bobbing and weaving, and martin's swing passes over it's head(body?). (Roll of 8)

A fear takes hold of the wizard, unnatural and cold. It grips his mind with irrational thoughts. He thinks of attacking the beast, but is unsure if he could even cast a spell. All seems lost when a manic grin crosses his face and he stands jumping and screaming and taunting the beast.

I wait until just before Ty attacks then take the Help action to grant him advantage in his attack.

Ran tries not to panic as magical beams shoot out of a floating eye thing. He steadies his blade and thrusts forward at the weird ball before him.

[18 to hit, 9 damage]

Ty draws his rapier and slashes at the gazer. Any other time and it would have missed, but Erythro's gyrations attracted its attention and the aberration bobbed into Ty's sword at the right moment. It falls, deflated into the muck.

Moments later, Erythro's fear subsides and Charity's daze clears.

(Combat has ended.)

"We must be getting close. Best we keep chatter to a minimum. Onward."

Marten gestures toward the passageway marked with the Xanathar symbol and continues deeper into the sewers.

moving on and constantly searching for passageways and secret entrances, what if the gazer came out of a small pipe etc

Shaking the cobwebs from his mind, the wizard whispers solemnly "We're in it now gentlemen. We have invaded a beholders lair, and killed its dog. Eleven eyes now seek us out. Onward. I will lead." And the wizard cautiously goes forward, keeping a keen eye out for anything suspicious or dangerous.

Charity

"Eleven eyes? That seems like a somewhat curious amount," Charity idly remarks, not having the slightest clue of what a beholder is, or why they have so many eyes, "but fear not, master Erythro. However many eyes there may be, I shall take the brunt of their scorn." Without any hint of irony, the farmgirl moves ahead of the pack, certainly not about to let the less sturdy folk take any hit on her watch.

Moving to the front, but if any perception leads to a warning from other party members, I won't move blindly ahead.

Ran:
Ran knows them to be vicious, merciless, xenophobic, violent, and greedy. They are powerful and very dangerous.

Ignoring the ladder, the party continues to follow the symbols. Before too long, they approach a circular hub with a pair of arrow slits carved into its outer walls, directly across from each other. Two passages continue on to the north and south. A stone door is set into the back wall of a stone ledge to the west. Everyone finds space by the door out of the muck, relieved for this small piece of dry...well, damp....space.

(The party approached from the east.

"Doors mean people. Let's make no undue fuss," Marten whispers. Looking over the assembled crew, he adds "I am the most heavily armored. I'll go first."
(assuming Raenar isn't wearing chainmail or better)

I push open the door as lightly as I can and step inside.

Is Raenar actually with us?

Did I find any secret doors?

I cast disguise self and turn myself into the goon from the bar that Yagra fought

Erythro grabs a hold of Marten, silently urging him to stop. Then slowly the image of the slender wizard is replaced by that of a boorish thug with eyeball tattoos on his head.

Raenar isn't with us? He stayed with the city watch
I assumed he came with us, because he was invited. But I looked back and couldn't find whether or not he actually said he'd come. And here, I waved him in with an "after you" gesture.
edit: but he wasn't in the initiative list of the last combat, or on the map, so, I guess he's not with us.

Ran takes a second to examine his surrounding. The arrow slits give him cause for concern.

"Maybe we should consider our exit strategy before we go any further."

He pulls out his 5 candles out of his pack and offers them up.

"Does everyone have a way of seeing in the dark if we get separated?"

Brad takes one of the candles "Thank you. It's days like this I wish my mother had hooked up with an elf."

Renaer sloshes up behind Marten. "I'm here, I'm here," he says. "I don't suppose you could spare a couple of daggers and a rapier from those gang members. I saw one of you stash them away. Preparing to outfit an army?"

If we detect no secret things, I will sneak into the door area. If needed, Stealth Check is 1d20+3.

With a silent nod, the disguised wizard opens the door.

The party creep into a short hallway. Another arrow slit faces inward, sparking immediate concern. But nothing seems to happen. The next door has no lock either and they press through, finding a room to the left that is filled with junk. Rusty weapons and threadbare clothing litter the floor of this area, which appears to serve as a coat room and armory. It contains nothing of value.

To the right is a guard station. Two goblins doze in front of their arrow slits, one facing into the sewers and the other into the hallway the party just passed through.
