General Specific A catastrophic success

Wow, hadn't realized it had been several YEARS since I did an entry here. So I thought I might do a bunch of mini-reviews on music I had gotten recently and my general impressions.

The Head and the Heart - Signs of Light

This is the third album of the indie group. I was a big fan of the first two albums (The Head and the Heart and Let's Be Still), so bought this one pretty much sight unseen (or unheard if you will). I gotta admit, that I don't like it nearly as much. It has a much stronger pop sensibility to it and so it lost a lot of what drew me to their sound in the first place. The songs are still recognizably from the same group, it just doesn't sound like them or it was very obviously an experiment that not all of the group was enthusiastic about. Still worth a listen if you are already a fan.

The Lumineers - Cleopatra
[IMG]

I really like this album. I have not yet bought their first album, but if it is like this one at all, I should have gotten it a long time ago. Lots of great songs and a few of the videos even interlink, which is interesting if you are into that sort of thing. I will say that a couple of songs fall flat, especially Gun Song. It just feels so out of place and just doesn't really work that well. Being #4 on the tracklist is also a weird spot for a song that just screams that it was tacked on to make someone happy or to pad the length of the album.

Vance Joy - Dream Your Life Away
[IMG]

Another one that I really enjoy. This is the debut album for Mr. Joy, who is an Australian singer-songwriter. He has several very good songs on this album, specifically Mess is Mine and Riptide. The latter being my introduction to his music when it was incorporated in a Lumineers playlist. I was a bit disappointed when I found out that one of my favorite songs, Fire and The Flood, is only available on the special edition. So if you want to get this album, look out for that. Otherwise, I highly recommend throwing some money his way so we can get more music from him.

Norah Jones - Day Breaks
[IMG]

This is a bit of an odd one. I really like Norah Jones a lot. She started off very jazzy on her first album, Come Away with Me, and won 5 Grammys for it. Subsequent albums have gone more to the pop side of her sound, but always had excellent songwriting. I have loved each album in their own way. This one (her sixth studio album) is very much a return to the jazz sound she started with. As big of a fan as I am, I can't name a favorite track though. It's still fairly new to me and so I'm sure I will pick out a few with more listens, it just doesn't have the songs that resonate with me like her previous albums have had. It sits in this weird space for me where I love the artist, but would recommend even fans to give the album a full listen before buying it.
